Project-Based Learning

It is a type of modern learning that depends on the implementation of a set of projects assigned to students within the lecture, and project-based learning is also known as one of the educational strategies that aim to link the field of systematic education, and field education that contributes to supporting students to employ their personal skills in interacting with the curriculum, and makes them feel their independence, and their ability to lead the lecture in a self-style, and also the idea of project-based learning is associated with most studies Undergraduate and postgraduate studies that depend on the presence of a project within their study plans as a condition for obtaining a university degree.

 History of project-based learning

The first ideas about the idea of project-based learning date back to 1897, which is associated with an article entitled (Learning by doing) published by the famous psychologist John Dewey, in which he referred to the idea of students' freedom to research on the curriculum, and that the teacher's role is linked to guidance, not to impose certain ideas on his students, hence educational research began to seek to apply new educational ideas that help develop learning, the most important of which was the idea of project-based learning. Many psychologists have been interested in this type of learning, the most famous of which was the educational psychologist Jean Piaget, who considered the idea of project-based learning as one of the best educational ideas, which is concerned with focusing on making the student an essential part of the lecture parts, by presenting a set of problems to students, and then assigning them to search for solutions to them, and formulating them based on the formula of study projects that help them reach the goals required of these study projects.

Characteristics of Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning has a range of characteristics, namely: It depends on a specific idea or problem that must be worked to reach solutions within a specific period of time. The lecturer and teacher help evaluate students, identify their personal skills, and are associated with the preparation of projects and research. It contributes to increasing students' personal knowledge by seeking to reach a solution to the project idea. It helps to create or make something new, especially in projects related to engineering and scientific ideas. It is considered one of the advanced educational methods, especially in the field of self-learning.

Types of project-based learning projects

1.  Construction projects: They are projects that depend on linking them to a new and unknown idea, such as: working on the manufacture of a new automated device. Organizational projects: They are projects related to the existence of a study plan, and are divided into two types, namely:

            i.  Structured projects: They are projects that depend on setting a set of goals by the lecturer, and students must adhere to them.

ii.  Unstructured projects: These are projects in which students are left free to choose the goals and methods that will be used in their preparation.

2.  Academic projects: These are projects that are considered part of the overall marks of the course, and their mark is not considered a type of additional marks, or participation marks.
